….declares War on “Global Conspiracy” Against Nigerian Airlines
Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister, Festus Keyamo, has vowed to finally enact the “Fly Nigeria” Act, a long-awaited legislation that would mandate government agencies to utilize Nigerian airlines for all official travel.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement on the bill, Mr. Keyamo expressed frustration over the 15-year delay in implementing this crucial policy.
He emphasized that under his leadership, the act would become a reality.
The “Fly Nigeria” Act aims to boost the domestic aviation sector by ensuring that government-funded travel, including personnel, contractors, and cargo, is prioritized on Nigerian airlines. This move is expected to significantly increase patronage for local carriers.
Several key stakeholders, including former Aviation Minister Chief Omotoba, Air Peace Chairman Dr. Allen Onyema, and United Nigeria Airline Chairman Professor Obiora Okonkwo, welcomed the Minister’s initiative.
Keyamo highlighted the “global conspiracy” against African airlines, where foreign carriers dominate the market.
He argued that the “Fly Nigeria” Act would create a level playing field and empower Nigerian airlines to compete effectively.
The act will require government agencies to prioritize Nigerian airlines for all domestic and international travel, even for connecting flights, this, the Minister believes, will stimulate demand and encourage airlines to expand their routes and services.
The next steps involve the formation of a technical committee to finalize the bill’s draft.
Once approved by the Federal Executive Council, the bill will be presented to the National Assembly for legislative consideration.
