The Flight Dispatchers Association of Nigeria (FLIDAN) has called for improved working conditions, recognition, and safety measures for flight dispatchers.

The association’s president, Mr. Daniel Ayuba, made this appeal during the FLIDAN Annual Conference held in Lagos.

Ayuba highlighted several key issues faced by flight dispatchers, including:

Type Ratings: The association is advocating for type ratings to be stamped on dispatchers’ licenses, similar to pilots, to enhance accountability and safety.

Mandatory Logbooks: FLIDAN proposes the introduction of mandatory logbooks for dispatchers to document and preserve critical experience gained on the job.

Job Placement and Training: The association emphasizes the need for consistent job placements and on-the-job training opportunities for new graduates.

Fair Compensation and Respect: Ayuba called for transparency and fairness in salary structures, ensuring that dispatchers receive the respect and compensation they deserve.

He highlighted the recent tragic loss of a dispatcher due to overwork and poor conditions, urging for immediate action to prevent such incidents.

Ayuba emphasized the crucial role of flight dispatchers in ensuring aviation safety, from pre-flight planning to weather analysis and fuel management.

Despite their vital contribution, dispatchers often face challenges such as long hours, high-pressure environments, and limited career advancement opportunities.

Dr. Alex Nwuba, the 2nd Vice President of the Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ASRTI), echoed these concerns, identifying specific issues like long and irregular work hours, high-pressure environments, and lack of recognition.

He suggested strategies to improve work conditions, including optimized shift scheduling, effective stress management techniques, and enhanced work-life balance.

Former Nigerian Ambassador Ayoola Olukanni also highlighted the challenges faced by dispatchers, including low remuneration, poor medical benefits, and high unemployment rates.

He proposed a five-year capacity development roadmap for flight dispatchers and urged for increased recognition and support from the aviation industry and regulatory bodies.
