….promotes inclusivity, diversity, Inaugurates SWAN
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has inaugurated its Aviation Chapter, with Mr. Ayodele Olatiregun, FCA, as the pioneer chairman.
The inauguration of the ICAN Aviation Chapter marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of financial excellence in the aviation sector.
This is also in a bold move to strengthen the role of finance professionals in the aviation sector and aims to foster excellence, promote integrity, and drive innovation within the financial landscape of the aviation industry.
The inauguration marks the beginning of a transformative journey where financial leadership meets industry innovation, and accountability meets altitude.
The chapter is founded on three pillars: Professional Excellence, Strategic Collaboration, and Sustainable Systems.
A Flightpath to Financial Excellence
The chapter’s theme, “Flightpath to Financial Excellence: Integrating Strategy, Systems, and Standards,” sets the tone for the journey ahead.
According to Mr. Olatiregun, achieving financial excellence in the aviation sector requires three critical elements: a clear strategy, efficient systems, and adherence to sound standards.
He said, “Strategy is our navigational compass. Without strategic clarity, no organization can truly soar. In the airport and aviation space, our financial strategies must align with operational goals, infrastructure development, safety imperatives, and sustainability targets.”
The chapter also aims to strengthen its systems, harnessing digital infrastructure to improve accuracy, transparency, and speed.
“Finance is no longer a back-office function; it has become a strategic cockpit,” Mr. Olatiregun emphasized.
Standards: The Guardrails of Financial Excellence
The chapter will also promote sound standards, embracing governance, internal control frameworks, compliance with ICFR, IPSAS, IFRS, and international best practices.
According to the pioneer chairman, “Standards are not barriers; they are the guardrails that protect value, attract investor confidence, and safeguard institutional integrity”.

The Way Forward
To achieve its lofty goals, the chapter will focus on:
Continuous Professional Development: Providing relevant and timely training programs, workshops, and seminars that address the specific needs of aviation finance professionals.
Knowledge Sharing and Networking: Creating platforms for members to connect, collaborate, and exchange best practices.
Advocacy and Thought Leadership: Engaging with industry stakeholders to promote sound financial policies and practices.
Ethical Leadership: Upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in all endeavours.
Elevate for the Skies: A Developmental Program
The chapter will also launch a developmental program, “Elevate for the Skies,” aimed at creating a sustainable growth of membership in the Aviation Industry by providing an avenue through sponsorship for accounting graduates in the Aviation Industry to become members of ICAN.
SWAN Unit Inaugurated
In a move to promote inclusivity and diversity, a Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN) unit has been inaugurated within the chapter. This initiative aims to serve as a strong voice for women in aviation finance, encourage mentorship, professional development, and networking opportunities.
A Commitment to Excellence
The ICAN Aviation Chapter has pledged to work tirelessly to elevate the profession, contribute to the industry’s success, and leave a legacy for future generations. With a clear vision to become the go-to body for financial insight and integrity in aviation, the chapter is poised to make a lasting impact in the aviation and finance sectors.
As the chapter embarks on this journey, it is confident that with collective strength, it will continue to reach greater heights.
