The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has intensified efforts to boost the country’s air cargo sector.
During a crucial meeting with the Aviacargo Roadmap Committee, FAAN’s Managing Director/CEO, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, emphasized the government’s commitment to accelerating air cargo development and urged the committee to expedite implementation.
Established in December 2022 to elevate Nigeria from Africa’s fifth to the top air cargo position, the committee has faced challenges due to leadership changes at FAAN.
However, under Mrs. Kuku’s leadership, the authority has renewed its dedication to the project.
A key outcome of the meeting is the launch of pilot export projects through four airports – Lagos, Kano, Enugu, and Jos.
These trials will test the efficiency of the air cargo pathway, involving key stakeholders and government agencies like NEPC, NAFDAC, SON, NAQS, NDLEA, and Nigerian Customs. A subcommittee has been formed to expedite the pilot projects, with a report due in two weeks.
Mrs. Kuku commended the committee’s perseverance and urged them to accelerate progress, adding that, FAAN has demonstrated its support by creating a new Directorate of Cargo Development and Services and streamlining processes within cargo terminals.
