FAAN Conducts Successful Mock Aircraft Emergency Drill at Lagos Airport

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) successfully conducted a mock aircraft emergency drill at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos today. 

The exercise simulated a scenario where an aircraft veered off the runway and caught fire upon landing.

The drill, which was conducted in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, aimed to assess the readiness of emergency response teams to handle such incidents. 

Firefighting and medical personnel swiftly responded to the simulated emergency, extinguishing the fire within three minutes and evacuating 45 passengers and six crew members.

Mr. Olatukunbo Arewa, Regional Manager, South West Airports and Airport Manager, MMIA said, “We are pleased with the timely and efficient response of our emergency teams”.

“This exercise demonstrates our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all passengers and airport personnel.”

Arewa further emphasized the importance of regular training and drills in maintaining a high level of preparedness. 

“We will continue to identify areas for improvement and take necessary steps to enhance our response capabilities”.

He reiterated that, FAAN remains dedicated to upholding the highest safety standards and ensuring a safe and secure environment for all airport users.

Mrs. Dolapo Fakunle, Deputy General Manager, Station Commander, Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Services, praised her team’s performance, attributing their success to rigorous training and the availability of state-of-the-art equipment.

Dr. Ofoegbu Okechukwu, Head of Department, Medical Team, expressed satisfaction with the medical team’s professionalism in attending to the simulated victims. 

“We are confident in our ability to handle real-life emergencies”.
