Enugwu Ukwu Day: Indigenes urge to sustain momentum for a progressive community

….honours ‘Women of Worth’ with awards

In commemoration of the Enugwu Ukwu Day, indigenes have been called upon to seize the opportunity of the Celebration, to identify developmental gaps and renew commitment to the ideals of continuous improvement in all facets of their communal life. 

President, Enugwu Ukwu Community Development Union, ECDU Women wing, Lagos , Engr Felicia Agubata , PHD made the call at the just concluded 2022 Enugwu Ukwu  Day Celebration held in Lagos on Sunday, 5th Dec 2022 . 

Engr Felicia Agubata acknowledged the legacies of the past, present and emerging heroes and heroines of the great town maintained that their leadership styles and attitudes paved the way for a progressive Enugwu-Ukwu. 

Adding that, the values of hard work, development and collectivism which they infused in Enugwu-Ukwu DNA must be remembered cultivated and renewed yearly.

“For some of us, Enugwu Ukwu day Celebration is both a wake up call and  a spiritual renewal rite ; an energy building exercise for the huge task  of community building.

“We must not celebrate for the sake of celebration. We need moral courage and unity of purpose to strengthen our humanity and advance human civilization  from a community standpoint and nationally too”. 

“We must not rest on our laurels , else we will lose momentum as a cohesive and forward- looking community”.

“Amongst other things , it offers us an opportunity to recognize our successes and drawbacks ; it enables us to re-commit to the ideals of collectivism”. 

She disclosed that, awards would be given to deserving men and women who distinguished themselves in their different endeavours, adding that, the idea is to inspire more people to step up their games and generate value for our community. 

“This year, we are celebrating seven deserving women with ‘Women of Worth’ Award. These women are influencers of good conduct . Expectation is that they will model the right attitudes and behaviors at all times and in all circumstances . 

“These are women who have shown character and good conduct in various areas  within the community and outside.They are our ambassadors.

According to her, people perceive career women as those who cannot perform in village settings but we want to show good example and enhance our community.

“We will motivate and inspire the younger ones through the power of personal examples”We want to groom the young to be role models of tomorrow. 
“We are also giving ‘Excellence Awards’ to the men, patrons and matrons of the society”. 

One of the female beneficiaries of the Award,  Mrs Ifeanyi Obi Nwoye said, “I feel great that my community recognized me. “My plan is to reach out to other women and mentor them to be great women in the society “.

Another recipient, Lois Nwana, “I am happy to be singled out for this award. I appreciate it. I believe to whom much is given, much is expected”.

On her part, Ifeoma Okekearu said, “We are ready to be role models for other to emulate”.

Other nominees for ECDU ‘Women of Worth’ were Chinwe Nwune, Ifeoma Anaetoh, Dr. Oby Okonkwo, Chinwe Mbah.

Enugwu Ukwu Day is celebrated on every first Sunday in December.
