Enugu State is poised to become a major tourism hub in Nigeria with the upcoming unveiling of several groundbreaking projects, including the first zipline in the country and the longest canopy walkway in Africa.
The state government has approved a budget of over N13 billion naira for the development of these initiatives, which are expected to drive economic growth and attract millions of visitors.
According to Culture and Tourism Commissioner Dame Ugochi Madueke, the first phase of the project includes the construction of a 600-meter canopy walkway, known as the Nsude Pyramid Canopy Walkway, which will be the longest in Nigeria and the first in the Southeast.
The walkway will feature rondavels, a lighthouse, and an observatory with a restaurant, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
Other projects in the pipeline include the development of the Ngwo Pine Forest, which will feature a 300-meter zipline, the first in Nigeria, as well as rotundas and flower arrangements to enhance its natural beauty.
The Cross of Hope at Okpatu Hill will boast a 50-meter cross atop a 15-story building, making it the tallest cross in Africa.
Also, the Awhum Waterfall will undergo significant development, with the addition of a canopy walkway and boardwalk to enhance the visitor experience.
The Akwuke Beach and Atakkwu Waterpark will be transformed into a world-class waterpark with experience centers, food courts, and renewable energy.
The Ovu Lake Golf and Resort will feature a golf course, experience centers, food courts, and renewable energy, as well as a boat jetty to host high-profile events.
The total cost of the projects is estimated to be around N30 billion, with the second phase expected to include a cable car from Okpatu to Awhum, as well as developments at other sites such as Ezimo, Oji River, and Awgu.
Governor Peter Mba’s ambitious plan aims to grow the state’s economy from $3 billion to $30 billion, with tourism expected to play a major role in driving this growth.
The governor has set a target of attracting 6 million visitors by 2027, and the development of these projects is expected to generate significant revenue and job opportunities for the local community.
