The Managing Director of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Capt. Hamisu Rabiu Yadudu has assured that the completion of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu will be feasible as earlier scheduled, pledging safety, security and passengers comfort in the aviation industry this 2020.

The Enugu airport was closed about 3 months ago for the reconstruction of the runway and other renovations, following concerns raised about the safety of flight operations in and out of the airport.

The FAAN helsman who gave the assurance at the weekend during a party organised by Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) to celebrate the end of the year party for 2019, pointed out that the contractor PW Nigeria Limited was on top of the job while FAAN project management team is always on site to monitor the progress.

Yadudu said “It is going very very well because we have a perfect team working with us. PW is already a reputable company and they are taking the project and the FAAN project management team is always on site. The team from headquarters regularly visit there. Yesterday, they came back from there. Then, there is a project team on ground and of course, our consultants. Most importantly, our host, the state government has been very wonderful. We have no issues and no complaints whatsoever”.

On the end of the year party, the FAAN MD stated that FAAN does it every year but that this was the first time they are consolidating on the party at one time.

“It is not about Avsec or operations. We are all one and we are one team. We have the year together and we are celebrating together” he added.

Yadudu maintained that FAAN had 100 percent achievement and that they were all very happy, adding that “We have challenges but the important thing is that all the ground work are on ground. All the planning and development are in progress. Some have already been recorded and we are making progress.”

Also speaking at the event, the Regional General Manager and Airport Manager, Murtala Muhammed Airport, Mrs Victoria Shin-Aba lauded workers of the airport, stating that they had been able to increase the ambience of the the 40-year old airport.

Explaining further on the purpose of the party, Shin-Aba said “We have reasons to celebrate 2019. This party is for all of us. At the end of the day, I appreciate my Heads of Department because they have been there all the way. Success recorded last is given to all of us”.

She decried a situation whereby different departments in MMA organize their separate end of the year party, stating that this was the reason they have decided to stage the party which had been able to carry every department along.

She said she was very happy that the gathering brought all workers of MMA under one umbrella.

“I am happy all workers of MMA will come under one umbrella today. It gives me a great joy. I appreciate you and I thank you. We did not give you enough time in the course of planning and you are all here supporting us”.

Listing their achievements for 2019, Shin-Aba said MMA had about 7.3 million passengers and 36,273 aircraft movements.

She however, agreed that the airport had challenges as regards security last year, but that FAAN was working assiduously to address them.

High point of the event marked the presentation of Certificate of Merit to different departments of MMA including, AVSEC, ARFFS, Aviation Medical Services, Servicom/Customer Services, Audit Department. Safety, Civil and Building, Mechanical, Electrical and others.

There was also Award of Special Recognitions for the year 2019 to the trio of Josephine Ugwu of Commercial Department, Okorie Uju Fredaline of Avsec and Omoniyi Omotayo Michael of Avsec.
