The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) is calling for evidence-based strategies and engineering-driven interventions to tackle the persistent issue of petroleum tanker explosions across Nigeria.

This urgent plea was made by Engr. Margaret Aina Oguntala, FNSE, President of the NSE, during her participation in a two-day national workshop focused on the critical problem.

The workshop, titled “The Problem of Petroleum Tanker Explosion in Nigeria – The Issues, the Challenges, and the Solutions,” was organized by the Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers (NISafetyE), a division of the NSE.

Held on May 27th and 28th, 2025, at the National Engineering Centre (NEC) in Abuja, the event served as a crucial platform for stakeholders to address the alarming frequency of tanker-related incidents.

The forum convened a diverse group of participants, including safety engineers, government representatives, emergency management agencies, and key industry players.

Their collective aim was to deliberate on practical and policy-driven approaches to mitigate the risks associated with petroleum transportation.

The workshop featured intensive technical sessions and expert panel discussions, all geared towards generating actionable recommendations for improved transport safety and stricter regulatory compliance.

Engr. Oguntala commended NISafetyE for organizing such a timely and pertinent dialogue, underscoring the NSE’s unwavering commitment to supporting collaborative initiatives that foster public safety, infrastructure resilience, and engineering excellence throughout Nigeria
