… honours commander for anti-drug efforts
The Northern Youth Association of Nigeria (NYAN) has publicly lauded the Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for its significant contributions to the nation’s drug control efforts.
This commendation came during a recent visit by a NYAN delegation, led by National Vice President Mallam Danladi Iliya, to the state commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, at the NDLEA headquarters in Benin City.
Mallam Iliya specifically highlighted the Edo State Command’s “outstanding contributions” to the war against illicit drugs, stating that the association had closely monitored their work.
In recognition of these efforts, and particularly Commander Mitchell’s dedication to youth empowerment, philanthropy, educational development, and effective resource management, the association presented the prestigious Ahmadu Bello Platinum Leadership Award, Jakadan Matasan Arewa Icon of Nation Building.
The group expressed profound appreciation for Commander Mitchell’s unwavering commitment to transforming the lives of Nigerian youth by addressing critical social issues such as drug abuse.
Iliya emphasized that the award is part of a broader NYAN initiative to celebrate individuals who demonstrate exceptional dedication to national development.
In his response, Commander Mitchell graciously accepted the honour, acknowledging it on behalf of the Edo State Command.
He reiterated the NDLEA’s crucial role in combating drug-related challenges, outlining their functions to include “coordination of drug laws, undertaking investigations, and prosecuting those involved in the production, trafficking, and sale of narcotics and psychotropic substances.”
He also emphasized the agency’s commitment to “providing anti-drug abuse counselling and rehabilitating individuals with substance use disorders.”
Ofoyeju emphasized his personal commitment to fostering a drug-free society, stating, “I do not expect rewards for performing my responsibilities. Our work is driven by a deep-seated desire to foster a healthier community.”
In a gesture of solidarity and to promote collaborative efforts in drug control, Ofoyeju decorated Mallam Danladi Iliya as a War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) Partner.
He also presented the delegation with a copy of the NDLEA Today magazine, urging them to continue recognizing deserving individuals who play pivotal roles in Nigeria’s growth and development.
This recognition not only celebrates the achievements of Commander Mitchell and the Edo State Command but also serves as a clarion call for sustained efforts in drug abuse prevention and youth empowerment nationwide.
The Northern Youth Association affirmed its resolve to work closely with the NDLEA to address the pervasive issues related to drug abuse, aiming to foster an environment conducive to positive change and community resilience.
