The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has invited Air Peace Limited to appear before it following a surge of consumer complaints regarding the airline’s alleged failure to refund ticket fares, even in cases of flight cancellations.
According to the Director of Corporate Affairs at the FCCPC, Mr. Ondaje Ijagwu,in a statement, these actions may violate Sections 130(1)(a) and (b), and 130(2)(b) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.
This legislation guarantees consumers timely refunds when advance bookings or reservations are unfulfilled due to a service provider’s failure, emphasizing fair dealing and protection against unfair practices.
A formal summons, dated June 13, 2025, compels Air Peace to appear at the FCCPC’s Abuja headquarters today.
The summons, issued under Sections 32 and 33 of the FCCPA 2018, highlights that non-compliance with Section 33(3) of the Act could lead to severe penalties, including fines or imprisonment.
The airline has also been directed to provide extensive documentation, this includes a complaint log for refunds spanning the past twelve months, a comprehensive record of all processed refunds to date, a list of all flights cancelled on every route within the last year, and details of remedial actions taken to alleviate consumer hardship caused by these cancellations.
This latest development comes after the FCCPC initiated inquiries in December 2024 into separate allegations of exploitative ticket pricing by Air Peace, specifically concerning significant price increases for advance bookings on certain domestic routes.
Air Peace subsequently launched legal proceedings to prevent the Commission from continuing that particular inquiry.
The FCCPC, however, has stated that the current summons is an entirely separate matter.
The FCCPC reiterated its commitment to upholding the FCCPA (2018) and holding service providers accountable to ensure consumers, particularly airline passengers, are shielded from exploitative or unfair market practices.
