….as NCAA Spearheads Efforts to Lower Ticket Prices
The Acting Director General, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Chris Ona Najomo, commends Air Peace for offering lower airfares to London, citing it as a positive outcome of healthy competition, providing Nigerian travelers with more choices.
He urges support and praise for Air Peace, believing such actions could prompt foreign airlines to reduce their fares as well.
Regarding efforts to secure lower airfares for Nigerian travelers, Capt. Najomo mentions a recent joint meeting with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and the National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies (NANTA), where airlines were encouraged to offer lower fares.
He notes that most airlines have complied, resulting in reduced ticket prices.
While emphasizing that the NCAA cannot set airfares, he vows to advocate for fare competition and consumer protection within the framework of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act.
To address escalating ticket costs, the NCAA established a 10-person committee led by Mr. Horatius Egua, Director of Special Duties.
This committee aims to ensure foreign airlines follow government directives to release low-inventory tickets and suggest fair pricing compared to other West African markets.
Committee members include representatives from NCAA, FCCPC, NANTA, and IATA.
Although several airlines, including Lufthansa, KLM, Egypt Air, Ethiopian Airlines, British Airways, Royal Air Maroc, RwandAir, and Turkish Airlines, have agreed to open their lower inventory, none have adjusted their ticket prices as directed.
The NCAA reaffirms its dedication to safeguarding the interests of Nigerian travelers.
