South African Airways (SAA) is actively repositioning itself as a comprehensive network carrier, extending its reach beyond its Johannesburg hub.

In a strategic move to promote diverse travel options, the airline recently hosted a networking lunch in Lagos, engaging with top travel trade CEOs and shining a spotlight on Mauritius as an enticing destination for Nigerian holidaymakers and special events.

SAA’s Country Manager, Mrs. Leke Bamtefa, expressed her enthusiasm for the Mauritius route, emphasizing the airline’s commitment to showcasing the island’s appeal.

“Today’s event is designed to expose our key travel partners to the abundant opportunities Mauritius presents as a vibrant destination for leisure, weddings, honeymoons, and outdoor activities,” Bamtefa stated.

She highlighted SAA’s optimal connections to Mauritius and announced a partnership with Emotions DMC, an experienced destination management company, to ensure seamless ground handling services for clients.

She also hinted at a potential familiarization trip for travel trade members to Mauritius, contingent on the route’s performance, allowing them to experience the destination firsthand.

Managing Director of Emotions DMC, Mr. David Collard, elaborated on their role in developing Mauritius as a prominent market for Nigerian travelers.

“Emotions Destination Management Company provides inbound ground handling services in Mauritius, and we are passionate about welcoming customers to enjoy the island’s many land and sea activities,” Collard remarked.

He further clarified that Mauritius offers visa-free travel for Nigerians, provided they possess the necessary documents, including travel insurance, an air ticket, and proof of funds amounting to $100 per night, along with pre-booked or proposed on-arrival tour activities.

Collard painted a vivid picture of Mauritius, describing it as a melting pot of cultures with a population of 1.2 million.

He highlighted the island’s protective barrier reefs, which ensure safe water activities, and its distinction of having the longest zip line in the Indian Ocean.

Mr. Collard also drew attention to the vibrant nightlife at Green Bay, exhilarating quad biking in the South, and the picturesque Le Morne Peninsula, featuring stunning beaches and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Le Morne Mountain.

To further incentivize the attending CEOs, SAA conducted a raffle draw offering holiday packages to Mauritius.

COO/Executive Director of Patelo Travels, Mrs. Eloho Kagho, won the grand prize, which included three nights’ accommodation, transfers, tours, and SAA air tickets.

Mr. Muyiwa Matilukuro, MD/CEO of Victory Travels, secured the second prize of a two-night stay with transfers, tours, and SAA air tickets.

President of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agents (NANTA), Mr. Yinka Folami received a goodwill gift from Emotions DMC and South African Airways.
