The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has congratulated the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on his recent appointment as Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Banjul Accord Group (BAG), a regional coalition of seven West African nations committed to advancing civil aviation in the sub-region.
Describing the appointment as a recognition of Keyamo’s “exceptional leadership” and “bold reforms,” AON said the development underscores Nigeria’s rising influence in shaping the future of aviation across Africa and beyond.
Since assuming office, the AON in a statement signed by its president and vice president say, Mr Keyamo has driven a wave of policy reforms aimed at revitalizing the Nigerian aviation sector.
His tenure they say, has seen strengthened regulatory frameworks, enhanced aircraft leasing conditions, and more robust engagement with international aviation bodies, including the global Aviation Working Group.
These measures, AON noted, have significantly boosted investor confidence and improved the operating environment for local airlines.
AON cited milestones such as the launch of Air Peace’s direct Lagos-to-London route and Nigeria’s active participation at the Aviation Finance Conference in Dublin as landmark achievements under Keyamo’s watch, events that have elevated Nigeria’s presence on the global aviation stage.
The association also praised the minister’s commitment to safety and infrastructure development, particularly his push for the implementation of the Cape Town Convention, which has improved Nigeria’s standing in international aviation circles.
In expressing gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for what it described as visionary leadership, AON said Keyamo’s appointment reflects the government’s commitment to competent and transformative leadership in critical sectors.
The association added that under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the aviation sector is experiencing a level of reform and global relevance not seen in over two decades.
AON expressed confidence that Keyamo will bring the same drive and innovation to his role as Chair of the BAG Council of Ministers, fostering stronger regional cooperation and sustainable aviation development across West Africa.
