In a swift operation aimed at curbing criminal activity, a joint task force has apprehended five individuals suspected of being miscreants, scavengers and touts at the Joint Users Hydrant Installation (JUHI) within Murtala Mohammed International Lagos airport premises.

The raid, conducted by the Joint Monitoring Task Force (JMTF) on Friday, targeted the JUHI Canal and the International Access Road Bridge, both areas known for attracting unwanted elements.

As part of the operation, makeshift shanties used by these individuals as hideouts were dismantled.

According to a statement issued by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the JUHI Canal’s proximity to the Hajj and Cargo Bridges raised concerns about its potential transformation into a haven for criminal activity.

“It is disheartening to see the JUHI Canal gradually becoming a potential den for criminals due to its strategic location,” Mrs. Orah stated.

The apprehended individuals have been handed over to the Aviation Security Crime Investigation and Intelligence Unit (CIIU) for further questioning and appropriate action.

FAAN has issued a stern warning, declaring that any encroachment into the airport environment will no longer be tolerated. Individuals caught engaging in acts of vandalism or touting within the airport premises will face severe consequences.

This decisive action by the JMTF sends a clear message that FAAN is committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for passengers, airlines, and airport personnel at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

The dismantling of the shanties further demonstrates FAAN’s resolve to deter criminal activity and maintain the integrity of the airport’s infrastructure.
