……tears, gratitude as Keyamo delivers pension victory
In a show of appreciation, leaders of the Aviation Union Grand Alliance (AUGA) gathered at the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) Secretariat in Lagos to express deep gratitude to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, for his pivotal role in securing pension benefits for former Nigeria Airways employees.
The meeting, led by AUGA President, Comrade Captain Shaibu Alfa, and his assistant, Comrade Wusaini Ibrahim, was an emotional occasion marked by both celebration and reflection.
The long-awaited approval of the pension entitlements represents a milestone in the decades-long struggle faced by the ex-staff since Nigeria Airways ceased operations in 2004.
Acknowledging the minister’s efforts, Captain Alfa praised Keyamo’s personal commitment and hands-on leadership throughout the process.
According to him, the Minister’s active engagement, including personally accompanying union leaders to the Ministry of Finance, was instrumental in overcoming bureaucratic hurdles that had delayed the release of funds for years.
“His dedication to the welfare of aviation workers is exemplary and reflects a rare sense of responsibility in public service,” Alfa said.
While the approval marks a major victory, union leaders emphasized the need for swift action to disburse the approved funds without further administrative delays.
They also called on the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to recognize Keyamo’s exceptional service and allow him to continue in his role, citing his positive impact on the aviation sector.
The gathering also served as a solemn moment of remembrance for those who passed away during the long wait for their entitlements.
On behalf of ATSSSAN National President Comrade Ahmadu Ilitrus, the First National Deputy President led attendees in observing a minute of silence for the deceased, paying tribute to their sacrifices and reaffirming the union’s commitment to honoring their memory.
In his remarks, the ATSSSAN President conveyed the association’s heartfelt appreciation for the Minister’s unwavering support, promising continued solidarity as he advances his reform agenda in the sector.
The union extended prayers for the Minister, his family, and all stakeholders who contributed to the success of the pension approval, describing Keyamo’s leadership as an inspiration to public servants across the country.
As the aviation industry looks forward to the full implementation of the pension payment, union members expressed optimism that the Minister’s legacy will serve as a model for leadership and public service, bringing lasting benefits to the industry and the nation.
The event closed on a hopeful note, with resounding chants for the Minister’s continued success and prayers for God’s blessings upon all who stood by the workers throughout their years of struggle.
